Old Neno's Stories

Overview
Old Neno’s Stories introduces English-language readers to the work of Musine Kokalari, widely recognized as the first woman in Albania to publish literary prose. First written in 1939-1940, these stories portray everyday life in the historic town of Gjirokastër in southern Albania during a period of gradual social transformation.
Told through the distinctive voice of Old Neno—observant, sharp, and deeply rooted in tradition—the stories unfold through conversation, memory, and lived experience. Family tensions, neighborly exchanges, marriage negotiations, and departures for work abroad are rendered through lively dialogue that reflects the rhythms of communal life. The narrative voice carries both humor and judgment, revealing the moral codes, expectations, and contradictions that shape relationships within a tightly knit society.
In the second part of the collection, Old Neno travels beyond her familiar surroundings and recounts her encounters with modern urban life. These episodes extend the scope of the stories while preserving their observational tone, allowing moments of cultural difference to emerge through reflection rather than commentary.
Drawing on the cadences of oral storytelling, Kokalari’s prose preserves the speech, idioms, and emotional textures of everyday Albanian life. The stories offer both a historically situated portrait and a broader reflection on generational change, dignity, and the pace of social transformation.
This illustrated English-language edition — the first translation of Kokalari's prose into English — presents selected stories developed with attention to literary integrity, translation fidelity, and long-term accessibility.
Available in hardcover, paperback, and ebook formats.
"Here, where I was born and raised — in this mud I want to turn to dust."

About the Imprint
Mesagjeritë Shqiptare is an imprint of Albanika Press dedicated to literary translation and cultural preservation.
Books published under this imprint focus on historically significant Albanian authors and texts, presented in carefully developed English-language editions. The imprint approaches translation as an editorial responsibility, emphasizing fidelity to the original work, clarity for contemporary readers, and attention to historical context.
The imprint revives the name of the press founded in 1943 by Musine Kokalari and her brothers, Mumtaz and Vesim — silenced along with Kokalari herself under Albania's communist regime. Old Neno's Stories marks the beginning of its revival.
